ARC T7AR Application Success


One of the new products in the ARC product portfolio, ARC T7AR is a heavily ceramic reinforced version of ARC S7, and is designed to handle high temperatures, corrosive chemicals and severe sliding abrasion.

In early 2014, a biomass power plant in Germany contacted Chesterton to see if we could provide a product to solve an abrasion problem in their flue gas cleaning system. This was a system from Alstom called a Novel Integrated Desulphurisation system or ‘NID’. This equipment consists of a ‘J’ duct reactor where hydrated lime is mixed with the flue gas to remove the pollutants. This is a dry scrubbing system and this creates high levels of abrasion from the particles in the reactor. The power plant had seen severe wear to the ceramic tile lining used in the reactor after only 12 months operating.


With operating temperatures up to 170C and 70 tons per hour of hydrated lime injected into the reactor, along with corrosive flue gas, it was seen to be a very difficult application but the customer chose ARC T7AR to replace the ceramic tiles.

The ARC T7AR lining was inspected after 2 years in continuous service and the customer reported that the lining is still in very good condition. In the ceramic tile lined areas there are numerous holes completely through the steel substrate.


According to Alstom, the NID system is suitable for use in power plants (coal, oil shale, pet coke), waste to energy plants and industrial plants such as steel mills. As of 2013 a total of 12 GW of plants worldwide have been fitted with this type of FGD system. A list is available with the names of the plants where the NID scrubber is in use.
